2003년, 열아홉 살의 우리는 각자의 꿈을 나누었다. 선생님, 인권변호사, 라디오PD를 꿈꾸던 그 순수한 열망의 순간들은 이제 청춘의 가장 선명한 초상이 되었다.

20년이 흐른 지금, 우리는 40세가 되었다. 40, Forty, 불혹은 같은 시간과 공간에서 사춘기를 보낸 여섯 명의 여성들을 다시 만나는 작업이다. 출산율 0.67이라는 시대적 배경 속에서, 결혼, 육아, 직장, 비혼 등 각기 다른 삶의 궤적을 그리며 살아온 이들의 이야기는, '불혹'이라 일컬어지는 40이라는 나이가 현대 한국 사회에서 갖는 의미를 돌아보게 한다.

19살의 꿈과 40살의 현실 사이에서 우리가 이룬 것, 포기한 것, 그리고 새롭게 발견한 것은 무엇일까? 한 세대 한국 여성들의 성장과 변화를 담은 이 작업은 개인적 기억이자 집단적 초상으로서, 시간 속에서 형성되는 정체성과 그 과정에서 마주하는 선택과 도전들을 보여준다.

40, Forty, 불혹, 2024 은 동시대 한국 여성의 생애주기와 정체성을 탐구하는 6채널 비디오 설치 작품이다. 작가는 20년 전 전주여자고등학교에서 함께 사춘기를 보낸 6명의 동창들을 40세가 된 현재 시점에서 재회하여, 각자의 삶의 궤적과 현재의 모습을 섬세하게 담아낸다. 6개의 포츄레이트 영상은 결혼, 육아, 비혼 등 각기 다른 삶의 경로를 선택한 여성들의 모습을 담고 있다. 이들은 고교시절의 꿈과 현실, 결혼과 출산, 직업적 정체성과 모성의 양립, 노화와 미래에 대한 생각 등을 이야기 한다.

작품은 일상의 세세한 부분부터 인생의 중대한 결정까지, 개인의 경험이 어떻게 시대적, 사회적 맥락과 교차하는지 보여준다. 이를 통해 현대 한국 사회에서 '40대 여성’이라는 존재가 마주한 도전과 선택, 그리고 그 속에서 발견되는 개인의 서사를 포착한다.

In 2003, at nineteen years old, we shared our dreams. Teacher, human rights lawyer, radio producer—those moments of pure aspiration have now become the most vivid portraits of our youth.

Twenty years later, we have turned 40. "40, Forty, 불혹" is a work that reunites six women who spent their adolescence in the same time and space. Against the backdrop of a 0.67 birth rate era, their stories—following different life trajectories through marriage, parenting, careers, and singlehood—invite us to reflect on the meaning of age 40, known as "불혹" (the age of non-confusion), in contemporary Korean society.

Between the dreams of 19 and the reality of 40, what have we achieved, what have we given up, and what have we newly discovered? This work, capturing the growth and transformation of a generation of Korean women, serves as both personal memory and collective portrait, revealing the identities formed through time and the choices and challenges encountered along the way.

"40, Forty, 불혹, 2024" is a 6-channel video installation exploring the life cycles and identities of contemporary Korean women. The artist reunites with six former classmates from Jeonju Girls' High School, where they spent their adolescence together 20 years ago, capturing their life trajectories and current selves with sensitivity. The six portrait videos feature women who have chosen different life paths—marriage, parenting, remaining single, and more. They discuss their high school dreams versus reality, marriage and childbirth, balancing professional identity with motherhood, aging, and thoughts about the future.

The work shows how personal experiences intersect with temporal and social contexts, from the minute details of daily life to life's major decisions. Through this, it captures the challenges and choices faced by "women in their 40s" in modern Korean society, and the individual narratives discovered within these experiences.
